Kansas Department of Transporation – Press Conference April 27th, 2010
After visiting my thesis show located in the Kansas State Student Union, Julie Lorenz of the Kansas Department of Transportation contacted me with the intention of creating a partnership between the KDOT organization and my texting and driving designs. According to their public relations team, the campaign caught the Departments attention because the posters and animation were able to make a bold and direct statement concerning the dangers of texting and driving. Further, it was hoped that the statement from these designs could be used to support legislation which attempted to outlaw texting and driving from all Kansas Highways by 2011. In doing so, Kansas would join 23 other states nation wide who also have passed laws which outlaw texting while operating a motor vehicle. On April 27th, 2010, KDOT, Triple AAA, and several prominent Kansas lawmakers gathered in the South room of the State Capitol building to hold a press conference concerning a legislative bill that would ban texting and driving statewide. According to Lt. Governor Troy Findley, “Texting and driving is risky behavior, and Kansas needs a law to ban it.” The thesis work from the campaign served as backdrop during the press conference, and those in attendance made their thoughts on the subject heard. According to Deb Miller, Secretary of the Kansas Department of Transportation is quoted as saying, “we chose this work because it was strong, direct, and to the point, and we hope that people will take the message to heart to put down the phone and don’t text and drive.” The work will be displayed in the State Capitol for the next three weeks and will also be featured at the Kansas State Fair to be held in September of 2010.
